Backpacks are a great way of carrying books and supplies to school. In this video, Rachel, a Designer with Pottery Barn Kids, tells us how to choose the right backpack for your child. Rachel talks about the various backpack collection that Pottery Barn Kids offers. Pottery Barn Kids has three collections of backpacks with the Mackenzie and Fairfax topping the popularity charts. Each backpack collection comes in pre-k, 7 plus and 10 plus sizes. These backpacks come with a laptop pocket, an MP3 pocket and an opening for earphones. The Fairfax collection is classic, peppy and functional. It has extended zipper pulls and metal rings as an additional feature. The Mackenzie collection is available in bright prints and bold colors. It has clips in the front of the bag, so you can attach a lunch bag, towel or coat. It also has padded back panels for added comfort. According to Rachel, it is important for kids to use both straps while carrying backpacks as it helps to distribute the weight equally. She also suggests that while packing a backpack, the heavy items should be packed first. Backpacks should not be very heavy for the kids to carry around. According to the American Association of Pediatrics, a child should carry no more than 15% of his body weight. In other words, a child of 60 lbs should carry weight of around 9 lbs and not more.
